The 6th Annual May Day Festival was a great success and I would like to thank each and every one of you for coming out and supporting us.
While there were hundreds of people, the vendors as well as the BBQ cook-off contestants had plenty of food to choose from to meet everyone’s taste.
Local dignitaries that included WCSD Superintendent Carlene Anderson, WCSD Board Member Sharon Roberts, WCSD Board Member Faye Leddon, and Walton County Commissioner Cecelia Jones were present for opening ceremonies hosted by Jazmine Vo and Lela Baker.
Scott Keppel opened the day’s events with a prayer followed by Lee McManus singing the National Anthem while the WHS ROTC presented the US flag.
The queens and princesses of Walton County were there and spoke before I officially opened festival. The day’s entertainment was started by Ms. Hadley Muller’s group from Mossy Head Elementary School The Headliners.
Later in the day Jim Cosson stunned the crowd with some amazing harmonica playing, Sammy Williams sang a beautiful gospel tune, and T & T & Friends provided some gospel music.
Adults and children alike were entertained with the stilt walker and her balloon animals, the softball game for all ages, and the one event everyone looked forward to New Heights Wrestling was the final and biggest event of the day where two WMS 6th graders Levi Fountain and J.b. Baker took down JT during the first event!!
Face painting dazzled festival-goers with the beautiful artwork and designs which kept the vendor busy from when she setup in the morning until when she left that evening.
Colin Richards, Lorrieann Burton handled the BBQ cook-off which was the biggest for the Defuniak Springs area with 16 contestants. 18 judges “sacrificed” their day by tasting each and every scrumptious bite with Poverty Hill taking overall winner.
All contestants that participated should be proud and I would like to say thank you to them also. The playground and splashboard were busy, busy, busy all day with children running back and forth enjoying a great time!
I want to say thank you to all the volunteers for their time and help, the supporters for their sponsorships and belief in the organization, and most importantly the good Lord above for the beautiful day and for allowing me to be a part of your lives! Thanks ….. Chairman Marcus Baldwin
